NEW DELHI: Three Indian cyclists, who were part of the core group since it was formed about two years back, were surprisingly excluded from the squad just before the team was to board the bus for the Games on Monday.
The trio of Hitraj Singh, Gurbaz Singh and Parmajeet Singh were informed about the decision without being given any reason, sources said.
"The list of 27 cyclists was published in the newspaper. However, three cyclists were told at the last moment that there were no events for them and only 24 would take part in the Games. It is very disappointing for these athletes who have worked hard for these Games," said a source.
Coach Chayan Chowdhury was non-committal and said that the decision came from the government. Foreign coach Graham Seers however said he got to know of the decision only on Sunday.
"I was part of the selection committee and we were told to give 27 names. On Sunday evening I came to know that the list has been pruned to 24. It’s sad for the trio who have worked so hard. I read in TOI today that IOA wants to add more Indian names to allow the hosts maximum participation. Why not give these cyclist a chance when cycling is a developing sport in India? The experience at this level would have helped them a lot," said Seers.
